In the fall of 1990, my third grade teacher told the class we had ten minutes to write a poem which would be submitted into a competition at the local branch of the Boston Public Library. I quickly wrote down a few words, handed it in, and didn't think anything more of it. Then I got word I won.
A few weeks later, a man in a tweed suit stood behind a lectern at the library and told the assembled crowd about the symbolism in the poem—which I was learning about for the first time along with everyone else. The next day at school, my friends called me "Robert Frost," though I'm pretty sure they meant it sarcastically.
Over thirty years later (oof), my creative process is still the same: an assignment comes in, I feel my way through it, put something down on paper, and hope for the best.
